The start of the race is disrupted by a downpour which affects the north of the circuit, confronting the drivers of F2 in wet conditions for the first time with these new single-seaters. George Russell (ART GP) manages to take off well with Sergio Sette Câmara (Carlin) and Alexander albon (DAMS) while the two championship leaders, Lando Norris (Carlin) and Artem Markelov (Russian Time) call on the grid and are one lap behind.
The rain prompted several mid-pack drivers to stop to change to full rain tires. The choice proved to be a losing one for these drivers who saw the rain stop towards the middle of the race and who had to change back to dry tires.
While nothing seemed to disturb the first three drivers who had a lead over the competition, Albon suffered an engine problem which forced him to retire. The final laps were more hectic with Sette Câmara quickly catching up with Russell, the Brazilian failing to pass the Briton while he was briefly under investigation for having cut the northern chicane and gained an advantage.
George Russell takes a third victory this season and moves back to seven points behind Lando Norris in the championship. He is ahead of Sergio Sette Câmara and Roberto Merhi (MP Motorsport) who signs his second podium of the season. Luca Ghiotto (Campos) finishes 4e ahead of Antonio Fuoco (Charouz Racing), the Italian Ferrari yet having undergone a 10-second stop and go for an intervention by a mechanic on the grid after the 15-second signal.
Nyck de Vries (Prema Racing) fails to make its offbeat strategy work and has to settle for a 6e place ahead of Louis Delétraz (Charouz Racing). After a bitter battle for reverse pole, Nicholas latifi (DAMS) finally takes 8e place ahead of Tadasuke Makino (Russian Time). Nirei Fukuzumi (Arden) completes the top 10 from which the three championship leaders, Norris Markelov and Albon, are absent.
