De Vries: “Norris and Albon were no better than me”

Nyck de Vries failed to secure a starting place in F1 for the year 2019 unlike his former adversaries. The reigning champion of the F2 George Russell joined Williams, Lando Norris will defend the colors of McLaren, wheras'Alexander albon will evolve at Toro Rosso.

The 23-year-old Dutchman integrated into McLaren's young driver program will leave for a new F2 season with ART Grand Prix after failing to rank 4th behind its rivals. However, he believes that he would have deserved his place at the top of the pyramid.

“I don't want to be arrogant at all, but Norris and Albon were no better than me in my eyes, said the 2014 Eurocup Formula champion Renault 2.0 to Friesch Dagblad. Norris won one race, Albon won four and I won three. But that's the past. This year I want to take my revenge and win the title with ART. »

Nyck de Vries does not hide his frustration at seeing drivers of his generation access F1 while he is still at the foot of the flagship single-seater championship.

“I grew up with 70% of the current F1 grid. It's obviously frustrating at times to see that they are there and I'm not, but everyone makes their way and it's easier for some, he added. It was the best choice to come to McLaren a few years ago, but the team lost sponsors when performance declined and they had to cut some budgets. It didn't help me, but I'm proud of how I held up over the last few years and I'm still here. »
