Evans on pole in Santiago de Chile, favorites struggling

On one of the simplest circuits of the season (11 turns), Mitch Evans gave Jaguar its second pole position in Formula E. The New Zealander was the fastest in qualifying in Santiago, Chile, on Saturday January 18.

The new recruit of BMW i Andretti, Maximilian Günther, nicely made up for the slump of his teammate and championship leader Alexander Sims (15th) by taking second position on the starting grid. On the second row, we find two drivers with curiously the same time: Pascal Wehrlein (Mahindra) and Felipe Massa (Venturi).

One of the surprises of this session is the presence in Super Pole of Oliver Turvey (NIO). Engaged in the least efficient team last season, the winner of 24 Hours of Le Mans 2014 in LM P2 claimed a convincing fifth time.

French speakers Sébastien Buemi (Nissan e.dams) and Edoardo Mortara (Venturi) will have legitimate hopes by starting sixth and seventh respectively.

Conversely, some first-rate challengers have missed the mark. The fastest in Free Practice 2, Oliver Rowland (Nissan e.dams) went into the wall, just ahead of the 2016-17 champion, Lucas di Grassi (Audi). Finally, Ma Qing Hua (NIO) brings up the rear, his car not having been repaired in time after an accident in free practice.

The big names Mercedes, DS Techeetah or Virgin went through this session. Jean-Éric Vergne will start the race 11th, Sam Bird from 16th.

The Santiago ePrix will start at 20 p.m. French time.
