Thanks to eight pole positions and six victories, current series, Charles Leclerc won today the title of world champion of Formula 2 in Jerez (Spain) with three races in advance. His almost unchallenged domination this year with Prema Racing gave him the opportunity to be the first rookie to win a title in F2/GP2 since Nico Hulkenberg in 2009 with ART GP.
« It's awesome, he exclaimed after the race. The whole season was great. We have always been there in terms of performance, we have always been very fast. The only negative point at this level was at Monza during qualifying. But apart from that, we have always been on top and it is truly exceptional."
Beyond these results on the track, Charles Leclerc's season was marked by the disappearance of his father, just before the weekend in Baku (Azerbaijan), two years after that of his mentor Jules Bianchi.
« I had a lot of difficult moments from a personal point of view following the loss of my father and winning this championship is for me the best way to honor him. I would like to dedicate this title to him and I hope not to have to dedicate others later. I dedicated last year's [in GP3] to Jules [Bianchi], and this year it's for my father. »
