F2 – Crazy victory for Ghiotto at Monza

The Monza track (Italy) being very wet at the start after qualifying for the Formula 1, eight formation laps are completed behind the safety car before a standing start. Starting from pole, Nobuharu Matsushita (ART GP) was surprised by Nyck de Vries (Racing Engineering) who takes the lead of the race despite contact with Artem Markelov (Russian Time) in the first chicane. At the end of the first round, Charles Leclerc (Prema Racing) moved up five places and ranked 2nd.

While Artem Markelov pitted in the first half of the race, Oliver Rowland (DAMS) managed to come back at the start of the race from 13th to 3rd place in seven laps. Although on a wet track there is no compulsory stop, a large majority of drivers stop to put on new tires. Rowland is one of them but DAMS does a poor job of the left rear wheel which comes loose and causes the safety car to intervene 4 laps from the finish and leaves two laps of racing.

At the restart, Leclerc made a mistake at the chicane and had to let de Vries and Luca Ghiotto pass, who took the lead of the race. On the last lap, the two former ART GP teammates came into contact and were forced to retire.

Luca Ghiotto wins the first race of F2 of the weekend ahead of Antonio Fuoco and Nobuharu Matsushita. Nicholas latifi, Alexander albon, Sean Gelael, Sergio Sette Camara, Louis Deletraz, Gustav Malja and Artem Markelov complete the top 10. Norman Nato had some complicated final laps and finished 14th.
