Ferrari interested in IndyCar and Endurance

Reality or bluff? Mattia Binotto released surprising information during a conversation with the media SkySport Italia on Thursday, May 14 in the evening. The main team of the Team Ferrari has announced that the Reds are studying a possible program in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) or in IndyCar.

These commitments would take place in the near future in order to relocate the worker forces left behind by the budget cap in Formula 1 2021 soon. A “budget cap” that hardly pleases the Maranello brand. “Ferrari is imbued with social responsibility towards its employees, explained Mattia Binotto, and we want to ensure that each of them will have their place in the future.

For this reason, we have begun the evaluation of alternative programs and I confirm that we are watching IndyCar, which is currently a very different category from ours (F1) but which will have a change in regulations in 2022.

We also observe the world ofEndurance and other championships. We will try to make the best choice. »

Endurance would obviously be within the framework of LMDh. Many Ferrari's big rivals in GTE are seriously thinking to develop a prototype under this rule like Porsche, and the long-awaited return of the Prancing Horse in the premier category is a dream for fans and fans of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

IndyCar, on the other hand, would be a much more surprising scenario. In 1986, the Italian firm had thought carefully about crossing the Atlantic with a car of its manufacture without taking the plunge; but this maneuver was (already) political.

Enzo Ferrari wanted at all costs to keep the in-house V12 in Formula 1, against the FIA's decision to adopt the V8 as the sole architecture. So he decided to raise the specter of a departure for CART (former name of IndyCar). This intimidation maneuver worked perfectly, and Ferrari was able to keep its V12 in the Grand Prix for almost 10 more years.
