Filippi concludes the season

Luca Filippi, seventh on the starting grid for the second Portiamo race in the GP2 Series, certainly did not expect to win the last event of the season. But the racing circumstances were very particular to achieve this result. Blocked on the starting grid, Vitaly Petrov was initially avoided by all his rivals. Not by Michael Herck. Pushed back to the back of the grid after being penalized the day before, Herck hit Petrov at full speed. The Russian manages to escape from his car, not Michael Herck, extracted by the circuit's medical staff.

Littered with debris, the track must be cleaned before the race resumes and the safety car therefore remains on the Portimao circuit for a long time. After almost half an hour of waiting, the drivers can set off again. Andreas Zuber leads the debates ahead of Davide Valsecchi, Kamui Kobayashi, Lucas di Grassi, Luca Filippi and Nico Hulkenberg.

As the safety car prepares to enter the pits, Andreas Zuber sets off to keep the lead of the race, imitated by his pursuers. But, a few minutes later, the sanction falls: the pilot of the Team Coloni accelerated too early and overtook the safety car, which earned him a drive through, along with Davide Valsecchi, Kamui Kobayashi, Lucas di Grassi, Nico Hülkenberg and Pastor Maldonado.

It is therefore Luca Filippi, 5th until then and first driver not penalized for a pit stop, who finds himself at the head of this sprint race. The Italian can then stay the course and maintain his pace to fly towards an unexpected success, at the end of a chaotic race. He finally imposes himself in front Sergio Perez (finally downgraded for illegal overtaking), Javier Villa and Dani Clos. But everything was already decided, since Nico Hülkenberg had gleaned the drivers' title last weekend at Monza, while ART Grand Prix won the constructors' title at the end of the first race at Portimao.
