Unlucky in the race since the start of the season, Jack Doohan was able to show a completely different side in qualifying. After his pole position at the opening of the season in Bahrain last March, the Australian from Virtuosi took 2e of his career in F2 by nothing ahead of Jüri Vips (Hitech GP).
On a strategy shifted from the Prema drivers and in particular the provisional poleman Jehan Daruvala, Jack Doohan found the necessary resources to dislodge his rival from 1e place. While the latter remained in the pit lane after opting for a two-fast lap strategy, the son of Michael Doohan (5 times world champion in MotoGP) decided to take up a track which has continued to improve. Bet pays off.
With his tires perfectly warmed up, Jack Doohan set a perfect lap in 1'28"612 which gave him a little more than 2 tenths ahead of Jehan Daruvala. In the end, the Australian was not going to beat the Indian but rather Jüri Vips. Twenty-first and provisionally last, the Estonian decided to wait until the last moments of qualifying to get the times. The path clear before him, the protégé of Red Bull signed on 2e time on the line just 23 thousandths behind Jack Doohan! One time on pole, then 2e, Jehan Daruvala fell in 4e position under the checkerboard due to 3e time of Frederik Vesti (ART Grand Prix)
Pourchaire expelled from Top 5, Drugovich penalized
In the battle for pole position, Theo Pourchaire didn't have a say. Despite his presence on the track at the end of the session when the conditions were optimal, the ART Grand Prix driver lost a few places as he approached the checkerboard. After hoping for a Top 3, the Frenchman finished 7th, almost 4 tenths behind Jack Doohan. Note that the 2020 vice-champion of F3 was however hampered by Felipe Drugovich (MP Motorsport) at the first corner in a flying lap. A maneuver which cost the Brazilian 3 penalty places on the grid, found guilty by the race management. The second Habs entered in F2, Clément Novalak (MP Motorsport) finished 11th (+0“7).
⚠️ Felipe Drugovich has received a three-place grid penalty
Instead of reverse-grid pole, he'll now start the Sprint Race from P4 #SpanishGP #F2

Runner-up to Théo Pourchaire in the championship, Felipe Drugovich lost big in Barcelona due to his penalty. A time 10th and in “pole position” of the Sprint Race due to the inverted grid, the MP Motorsport driver fell to 13th and lost his pole to the detriment of Calan Williams (Trident).
