Dennis Hauger (MP Motorsport) didn't really have a battle. Starting in pole position due to the inverted grid, the Norwegian was threatened for a time by Jack Crawford (Hitech GP) but he knew how to manage the strong moments to take cover for good.
The Crawford threat extended over the first three rounds but the 2021 champion of F3 took the upper hand in an authoritarian manner by quickly relegating the American to more than 3 seconds. The Nordic then seemed to be heading quietly towards a first victory in 2023 but the intervention of the safety car after the stop on track of Jack Doohan (caught by Juan Manuel Correa) at 14e of the 22 laps of this Sprint Race closed the peloton.
It was then that a light rain appeared above Albert Park. Certain drivers like those of ART Grand Prix, Theo Pourchaire and Victor Martins, tried their luck by putting on rain tires while the rest of the peloton remained on slicks. A gamble that ultimately didn't pay off since the rain simply disappeared.
The Sprint Race restarted for the last two laps, Dennis Hauger did not tremble when he had to drive the point home. With complete peace of mind, the Norwegian outdistanced Jack Crawford to race towards his first victory of the campaign, his third in F2. Kush Maini (Campos) also made it onto the podium after holding off Arthur Leclerc (DAMS) while Zane Maloney (Carlin) completed the Top 5.
As for the Tricolores, only Isack Hadjar (Hitech GP) scored points. Party 10e, the Ile-de-France resident managed to get back into the peloton to cross the finish line in 6e position pocketing 3 units. Note that championship leader Ralph Boschung (Campos) did not even start since he made a mistake on his installation lap.
