For the Campos team, it's difficult to do better for the start of the season. There Formula 3 and Formula 2 made their comeback last weekend, and the name of the Spanish structure was on everyone's lips... and on the best positions on the timesheets. In both categories, Campos single-seaters won the sprint races with a brand new name on the winners' table, that of Ralph Boschung. But the Swiss also took a nice second place in the main race, where only Theo Pourchaire will do better. Boschung's teammate and rookie in the discipline Kush Maini finished 4th, bringing big points to the team.

« This weekend was a dream that the whole team has been working for for years, says Adrian Campos Jr., director of the eponymous structure. We went through very difficult times, with a lot of bad luck, but we deserved a weekend like this. To accomplish it in the first race of our 25th season, with Ralph, his first victory in F2, which he achieves with the same design as my father on his helmet, it's really special. I'm sure he was with Ralph. » The driver, who has been in Formula 2 since 2017 and who is entering his fourth season with the team, actually paid tribute to Adrian's father and founder of Campos by wearing a helmet in the colors of the Spanish flag.

« I couldn't hold back my tears, continues the main team, it was such a special day. I am very proud of Ralph, he is part of the family. When my father left, he kept his hope in the team. Seeing him have his best race weekend with my dad's helmet design was really special. »And these results are loaded with symbols, after a difficult year for the driver and the team: “ Last year, everyone saw our potential. We were top 5 in the Teams Championship before Ralph got injured, and we fell, observes the Spaniard, mentioning Boschung's neck injury which forced him to withdraw from Barcelona and Monaco. Having a rookie at his side with no reference for the next tracks was very difficult. And it was also for Ralph who had to watch from home as everyone rode and improved. Last year made this weekend even more special. »

Campos remains realistic

The team was also able to count on its rookie Maini, who started 6th and finished close to the podium. “ He was a somewhat underestimated driver, says Campos Jr. We knew it as soon as he got in the car. We saw his data, his skills, and we said to ourselves “Okay, this will be interesting.” He showed everyone in the paddock and behind the screen his potential. He showed how fast he is, how well he can adapt to this championship, and he will give experienced drivers a hard time. I am very happy for him and proud of what he has done. »

Despite a perfect start to the championship for the Spanish garage, Bahrain was only the first round of a season which includes 14. “ We are not thinking about the championship at the moment, procrastinates the main team whose team is, after this good performance, at the top of the Team ranking. Not every weekend will be like this, we would like to but it won't happen. We're just going to do our best, try to bring home as many points as possible and, if we're lucky enough, take the lead. If we can win, we will make sure we win, but if we can't do better than top 5, we will understand and we will go for those points. »

And the next opportunity for Boschung and Maini to bring home points will take place on March 17, on the Jeddah track (Saudi Arabia), where Campos and his drivers will once again have to stand out on an extremely competitive Formula 2 grid.
