Oscar Piastri at the table of Hamilton, Rosberg, Hülkenberg, Leclerc and Russell

Third in the first race of the weekend in Abu Dhabi, the Australian officially secured the championship title with two races remaining. The result of a sublime season and undivided domination, reminiscent of great campaigns achieved by previous champions.

A rookie who manages to win the F2 from his first year, we hadn't seen that since Charles Leclerc in 2017 and George Russell in 2018. It sets a scene for you, and above all it sets the level ofOscar piastri. By winning the championship title this Saturday in Abu Dhabi at the end of the first race of the weekend, the Prema driver became the first driver in history to consecutively win Formula Renault (which has since become FRECA), the F3 and F2, the three championships at the top of the pyramid of car. He also became the first Australian to win the F2 championship.

Arriving at Yas Marina with 51,5 points ahead of his runner-up Robert Shwartzman, the Aussie arrived at the circuit in flip-flops but he was not on vacation. He took pole position on Friday before securing a decisive podium in Race 1, even though he started from 10th position. But clever overtakes on Ticktum and Lawson, and even rather virile passes on Robert Shwartzman five laps from the goal allowed him to add panache to a title which was already really not devoid of it, given the successful season by the Aussie.

Despite a great start from Guanyu-Zhou in Bahrain, the Australian displayed relentless consistency throughout the year, reaching the podium at every meeting and in six of the seven main races contested so far. If he won the title last year in F3 without winning a single pole, he made everyone agree in 2021 by gleaning the last five leading positions consecutively. Only Charles Leclerc, over a full year, and Stoffel Vandoorne, spanning two campaigns, have done better so far (6).

Reservist in F1 in 2022.

Endowed with incredible racing intelligence and admirable maturity, the Australian has above all become the sixth driver of the GP2/F2 era to win in his first year in the category, after Nico Rosberg (2005), Lewis Hamilton (2006) Nico Hulkenberg (2009), Charles Leclerc (2017) and George Russell (2018). Unlike these five cracks, he will not have his chance directly in F1 next season, because of an unfavorable sporting pattern.

Member of theAlpine Academy, he is in fact barred in the stable at A arrowed by Fernando Alonso, who has one year of contract remaining, and by Esteban Ocon, which was extended for three years last June. His academy friend, the Chinese Guanyu Zhou, even inherited the last seat available in F1 at Alfa Romeo. Next year, Oscar Piastri will not have the right to do F2 again. He will be a reserve pilot at Alpine, while waiting (perhaps) for what he deserves: a seat in F1 in 2023. Given what he has demonstrated over the past three years, there is little doubt that the French brand or one of its competitors will give him a place.
