Oscar Piastri: “My chances of getting a Formula 1 drive in 2022 are extremely low”

Leader in Formula 2 ahead of Guan Yu Zhou, Oscar Piastri believes that he has little chance of obtaining a seat in Formula 1 for next season.

For its first season in Formula 2, Oscar piastri continued good performances with the Prema Racing team, to the point of being leader of the championship. In the middle of the transfer period at the Formula 1, the Australian driver was a credible candidate to regain a starting place. Asked about this before tackling the Sochi round (September 24-26), the 2020 champion of Formula 3  was pessimistic about his chances of riding in the premier category. “My chances of getting a Formula 1 drive next season are extremely low, if not practically zero.” Oscar Piastri nevertheless wishes to become a reserve driver. “The most logical step for me is to try to become a reserve driver for next year. See what kind of program we can put together and I hope to do some tests and some free trials.”

Although he says he is ready to become a reserve driver for 2022, the Australian does not wish to play this role for more than one season. “I am definitely aiming for a seat for the 2023 season. I will accept being a reserve just for one season.” For now, the Melbourne native wants to focus on the end of the season. There are only three rounds remaining (Russia, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates) to allow him to win a third consecutive championship, after Formula Renault in 2019 and Formula 3 last year. “If I could win this third championship in a row it would mean a lot to me, so I would go for all of that »
