Oscar piastri knew his mission. To be crowned this Saturday noon local time, and thus allow his Australian fans to see him on television, the Prema driver had to finish in the top 5 so as not to be dependent on the result of Robert Shwartzman (Prema). He did it with panache, going for a podium despite starting from 10th place.

As soon as the lights went out, Oscar Piastri put his best foot forward. His impulse, worthy of that of Mick Schumacher last year, allowed him to take 6th place, after having slipped through turn 1 perfectly. A flight which allowed him to stick to the coattails of his teammate Shwartzman, the only one who could still deprive him of the title , at least mathematically.

Cleverly, the Aussie followed the path set by his teammate. The two men, who spent the race together, overtook Dan Ticktum (Carlin) and Liam Lawson (Hitech) in the first part of the race, before chasing the Daruvala-Drugovich duo. Always impressive in his cool, Piastri could have been satisfied with 4th place behind Shwartzman, but he decided to dive on his teammate at turn 6 with five laps to go, to add even more flavor to a title that lacked it. not.

In a very calm race, where overtaking was very rare, with the exception of the Prema drivers, it was Jehan Daruvala (Carlin) who won ahead of Felipe Drugovich (UNI-Virtuosi). After resisting the Brazilian throughout the first part of the race, the Indian finally escaped to take his second victory of the year. For his part, the French Theo Pourchaire (ART Grand Prix) finished 7th and will start on the second row for Race 2. Clément Novalak (MP Motorsport) took 17th place. Tenth, Marcus Armstrong (DAMS) will start on pole for race 2 (15:40 p.m.).
