Paul Aron, the good surprise of this start of the season

Even those most keen on promotion formulas did not expect such a start to the season from Paul Aron (Hitech GP). It’s simple, on each of the weekends of Formula 2, the Estonian has been on the podium at least once: 3rd place during the Main Race in Bahrain, 2nd place during the Sprint in Jeddah and another in Melbourne, this time during Sunday's race. Among the 10 rookies on the F2 grid this season, the former member of the team Mercedes was not the one that aroused the greatest excitement. Drivers like Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Prema) or Gabriel Bortoleto (Invicta Racing) were a little more anticipated than him.

However, the numbers don't lie. After three meetings, the Hitech GP driver is second in the drivers' standings with 47 points, 15 lengths behind leader Zane Maloney (Rodin Motorsport), another surprising case this year. The Estonian has only missed the points once this season, it was during the Sprint Race in Melbourne. In the battle for the podium with Antonelli and Verschoor, Paul Aron was trapped by the exit of his two competitors, damaging his wing. End of hopes and fall in the rankings for the man from Tallinn. Despite this slight hiccup, the 20-year-old driver remains positive about his start to the season, which is not a big surprise for him contrary to what some suggested:

“It doesn't come out of nowhere, I've worked my whole life to improve little by little, He explains. En F3, you could see that I was already very consistent and I'm starting to be a complete driver. In a championship like Formula 2, driving with your head and taking risks intelligently works. It shows now because I am second in the championship. Podiums every weekend and two of them are Main Race podiums, so I'm happy with that. »

Be careful not to catch fire

Although these first three weekends in Formula 2 have been good, be careful that his good form is not just a flash in the pan. The season is still long, and the trend could quickly reverse if confidence is no longer there. Note that Paul Aron also took advantage of numerous racing events to make his way to the podiums (except during the Sprint in Melbourne). His running pace is good, without being extraordinary at the moment. Add to this, that within his team, the Estonian is undoubtedly the leader since Amaury Cordeel does not present a great threat to him…

The 20-year-old still has plenty of time ahead of him. There is no need to rush things, to want to access the F1 right away. Formula 2 has already shown us in the past that she has no trouble being ruthless with her drivers who are a little too greedy.

The three days of testing in Barcelona, ​​from April 23 to 25, will also redefine a lot of things. Teams in difficulty will be able to better understand their car and return to the battle for points, which could complicate things for Paul Aron. However, he himself knows that these days of driving in Catalonia will be crucial for the rest of the season:

“These will probably be the three most important days of this season, admits the person concerned. It's a new car and I think every team has test items and ideas they want to try.
