After a record pole position in 2021, Theo Pourchaire came close to doubling the stake this year. Very comfortable in the streets of the Principality, the ART Grand Prix driver finally lost to Liam Lawson (Carlin), (pole finally went to Felipe Drugovich after Lawson and Ayumu Iwasa penalties, placed in the same qualifying group, for not having slowed down sufficiently when the first mentioned had his accident) settling for 2e place on the grid for the Main Race this Sunday.

« I won't reveal my secret, joked Théo Pourchaire when asked about his ability to perform in Monaco. I love driving here and I feel really confident. I manage to go fast and I feel comfortable there. We are focusing on the Main Race. We need good points to catch up with the championship leader (Felipe Drugovich). »

If he does not make the Sprint Race his priority for the weekend, Théo Pourchaire nevertheless intends to try his luck. When leaving 9e and out of the points, the Grassois hopes to have overtaking opportunities to try to get back into the championship, a week after losing the lead to Felipe Drugovich, double winner in Barcelona last weekend.

« The Sprint Race will feel like a long qualifying session, he predicts. It will be a sequence of fast laps and slow laps. Unfortunately, it will be a bit boring at times. It’s Monaco, that’s how it is. I will try to double if the opportunity presents itself to me. There are only 10 points at stake, I have nothing to lose, there is no longer another Reverse Grid Sprint Race (the 3 2021-race format has been abandoned). There may be more opportunities than last year but the Main Race remains my main objective. »

To achieve this, Théo Pourchaire will have to be fully focused on his piloting within the walls of the streets of the Principality. Unique in the world, the Monaco circuit demands a lot from the drivers who sometimes finish exhausted. “ I think it will be very hard physicallyhe says. There are no straight lines and when you get to full throttle you have to turn. With the heat generated by following the rider in front, you have to stay focused. It's very long, it's very difficult but that's Monaco. That’s why you savor it when you win. I'm expecting a tough weekend, whether mentally or physically.."

He's doing worse than last year, maybe his 'secret' is a notch below that of Drugovich?!
