The qualifying format, introduced last year with a direct elimination duel system, will be retained in 2023. In the race, the distance to be covered will now be calculated in number of laps, and no longer in time remaining as was the case last season. Objective: to make races easier to follow while allowing teams to better control their own strategy. On the other hand, the number of remaining laps will be increased in the event of a race neutralization under Safety Car or Full Course Yellow, as before.
The abandoned Fanboost, the “Attack Charge” introduced
Fanboost, present since the start of the Formula E championship in 2014, will be removed. The introduction of fast charging technology will allow the arrival of “Attack Charge” during certain E-Prixes in 2023. This new feature will take the form of a mandatory 30-second pit stop during the race, made possible by a 600 kW fast charger. This will then unlock two periods of “Attack Mode”, during which the power of the electric single-seaters will increase from 300 to 350 kW. For other E-Prixes, the current “Attack Mode” system, triggered by passing between two marked gates on the track, will remain unchanged. It will be activated manually by the drivers who will be able to choose their activation strategy in order to optimize overtaking opportunities.
Finally, like the Formula 1 This season, each Formula E team will now have to complete at least two Free Practice 1 sessions during the 2023 campaign with drivers who have never participated in the electric championship.
“Following a successful eighth season, we have made slight changes to the racing format to bring the Formula E World Championship to an ever-wider audience, while encouraging teams to test new talent, rejoiced Pablo Martino, head of Formula E sporting activities at the FIA. With the arrival of the car The long-awaited Gen3, a 22-car grid featuring iconic names in motoring and some of the sport's best drivers, I have no doubt the new era of Formula E will be brilliant. »
