The promoters of the Formula E have just revealed the update of the 2022 calendar. On the program, 16 races with two opening rounds in Diriyah on January 28 and 29. If Monaco remains placed on April 30, 3 destinations will host the electric championship for the first time. These are Jakarta (Indonesia) on June 4, Vancouver (Canada) on July 2 and Seoul (South Korea) at the end of the season on August 13 and 14. A venue remains to be found for the 4th round of the season which should take place on March 5.

Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle is happy with the increase in the number of races: “ With more races in iconic cities, the upcoming season is set to be the biggest yet »

As for the weekend format, there is a whole new qualification mode. The field will be divided into 2 groups of 11 drivers, according to the world championship ranking. The top four from each group will meet in the quarter-finals for direct elimination duels. The driver who completes the rounds and wins the final will be credited with pole position. A change which may be difficult to understand but which is made for the spectators, according to Alberto Longo, director of the championship: “ For our fans, the new qualifying format was designed to be intuitive, unpredictable and entertaining. » The old method of qualifying sometimes disadvantaged a group of drivers, due to changing track conditions.

Last modification and not least, the race director will be able to add 10 minutes of additional time to the 45 minutes and one lap of the race, in the event of a Safety Car or Full Course Yellow. This will allow drivers to have more time to fight and therefore get back to the front of the race in the event of a poor qualification.
