The return of Maserati in car starts today. The Trident brand will discover the championship of Formula E in 2023, more than 50 years after leaving the Formula 1. The Italian team, which is entering electric competition at the same time as the appearance of the Gen3, has revealed its first duo of drivers. Eduardo Mortara and Maximilian Günther will represent the Emilia-Romagna team next season.

Eduardo Mortara, vice-world champion in 2020 and 3rd in the last Formula E campaign, remains with the same team despite the arrival of Maserati at the expense of Venturi, after spending 5 years with the Monegasque team. The Swiss will also discover the Gen3 with the Italian structure, he who drove with the two previous generations. Maximilian Günther arrives from Nissan e.dams, after a complicated 2022 season and only 6 points scored. The ex-BMW driver will support Mortara in the quest for world titles, an objective declared and assumed by Maserati.

Mortara for stability, Günther for youth

“Since joining the team in Season 4, it has become my home and I am really excited to continue my adventure with one of the hardworking and talented people for Season 9 and beyond,” said Eduardo Mortara, who will begin his 2023th season with the Venturi / Maserati team in 6. The last five seasons have been some of the best of my career… and I can’t wait to continue our success together in Gen3. As a Swiss-Italian, representing the Maserati brand in its return to international motorsport will be a great honor. »

For Maximilian Günther, the youngest E-Prix winner in Formula E, Maserati represents an ideal base after the difficult season at Nissan. “I am very proud to join the Maserati family alongside Edo [Mortara] for season 9, rejoiced the German pilot. I have a lot of admiration for the team and their performances over the last few seasons – they have been difficult to beat and fully deserve their current status as world runners-up. Being part of the return of the Maserati brand to competition in partnership with MSG Racing is a great honor for me and I look forward to building something very strong together. »

Maserati wants “fight at the forefront”

Vice-world champion in 2022, the former Venturi team which became Maserati intends to play the leading roles from 2023 and the appearance of the Gen3. “Season 9 marks an exciting new era for Formula E and I am delighted to extend our existing relationship with Edo [Mortara], and welcome Max [Günther] to the team, said new team principal James Rossiter, who joined Maserati in the off-season from DS Techeetah. Edo has been a cornerstone of our operation since 2017 and, heading into his 6th season, he is undoubtedly one of the best drivers in the field. We are very excited to see him paired with Max who is an exceptional young talent with immense potential. With this duo, we have a very strong driver line-up for Gen3, and we intend to be able to fight at the front. »
