Who can still be crowned world champion?

The outcome of the 8th season in Formula E is near. If four drivers can still succeed Nyck De Vries, Stoffel Vandoorne remains best placed to become Formula E world champion.

There are only two races left on the calendar. One last double header to end the 8th season of the Formula E. After 14 rounds, there are still several who can claim the throne of Nyck De Vries. Some are in more comfortable situations than others. So before the Seoul ePrix, a quick overview of the four contenders' chances of becoming world champion.

But before launching into the calculations, it is important to specify that in each race, drivers can collect up to 29 points (25 for 1st place, 3 for pole position and 1 for the best lap). So in South Korea, each title contender can gain up to 58 points in the rankings.

Stoffel Vandoorne, already one hand on the title

He's the one in the most comfortable seat heading into the final round of the season. Before the start of the Korean double header, Stoffel Vandoorne was able to capitalize on a lead by taking advantage of the failures of his three competitors in London. So much so that the Belgian now has a 36-point lead over his closest competitor Mitch Evans. So to see the pilot Mercedes succeeding his teammate, Nyck De Vries this Sunday, he will have to score at least 23 units over the entire weekend.

A performance largely within his ropes and which he could even achieve on Saturday in the event of victory in Race 1. If this is the case, the second event on Sunday would only serve to determine the classification behind Stoffel Vandoorne who could no longer to be joined neither by Mitch Evans, nor Edoardo Mortara, nor Jean-Éric Vergne. If we imagine a scenario where Mercedes is in difficulty in Seoul, two 4th places would still allow the Belgian to be crowned world champion.

Mitch Evans, the most serious of outsiders

When Edoardo Mortara and Jean-Éric Vergne bit the dust in London and New York, Mitch Evans was the only one capable of limiting the damage. But with only two races still scheduled on the calendar, the New Zealander knows that it will be complicated to worry Stoffel Vandoorne. With 36 points behind, the Jaguar driver is the best placed of the pursuers but the delay is already significant.

Obliged to score at least 47 points in the event of zero points from the Belgian, Mitch Evans will have to have an almost perfect weekend if he wants to disrupt the party at Mercedes. The Auckland native could be satisfied with two second places if they are accompanied by two pole positions and two fastest laps in the race. But this scenario would imply that Stoffel Vandoorne does not score a single point in Seoul, which remains difficult to envisage. The Jaguar driver will therefore have to quickly put pressure on the leader and victory seems to be an obligatory step towards a possible first crown in Formula E.

Edoardo Mortara, remake of 2020/2021?

Like Jean-Éric Vergne, Edoardo Mortara will certainly regret this drop in performance that he experienced in New York and then in London. While he occupied the leader's chair, the Swiss now finds himself in 3rd position with 41 units behind Stoffel Vandoorne. So like the previous season, driver Rokit Venturi could be forced to be satisfied with the runner-up place at the end of the day.

But like Mitch Evans, Edoardo Mortara can still become world champion this year. To do this, the 35-year-old driver must score at least 42 points. But a victory is not obligatory since two 2nd places coupled with two pole positions could allow him to get back in front of Stoffell Vandoorne. Provided once again that the Belgian does not score any points and that Edoardo Mortara scores 6 points more than Mitch Evans in Seoul.

Jean-Éric Vergne, mission impossible

The Frenchman's title chances at the dawn of Seoul are almost zero. By failing to win a single race and after its period of drought since New York, the Habs have almost said goodbye to first place in the championship. With 128 points on the clock, the DS Techeetah driver is 57 points behind the current leader. So if Jean-Éric Vergne still hopes to add a third title to his record in Formula E, he will have to have a perfect weekend.

The Frenchman is required to score 58 points in total, including two victories, two fastest laps in the race and two pole positions. But even if he achieves this performance, he will have to count on a massive failure of the 3 other contenders to be crowned world champion. It's simple, if Stoffel Vandoorne scores even 2 points, it's over for Jean-Éric Vergne in the championship.
