Call him “Mr. World Champion” from now on. Stoffel Vandoorne won his first title this season in Formula E. The Belgian, fallen hope of Formula 1, took his revenge in the electric category to win the first world title of his career. " World champion ! It's just the best feeling possible! When you look at the season we've had, our consistency, the car has been incredible, the team too. Each of us deserves, what we have achieved is very special” the pilot reacted Mercedes at the finish of race 2, in Seoul.

Stoffel Vandoorne built his coronation throughout the season, with exemplary regularity. If the Belgian only won one race during the 2021/2022 financial year, he managed to finish in the points 15 times in 16 events, with 8 podiums to boot. Less victorious than his main competitors, the native of Kortrijk has above all been consistent all season. “Mitch [Evans] and Edoardo [Mortara] really pushed me to the end, we were neck and neck the whole time, but it was really about consistency until the end. They had more victories but we had more points. »

“I’m just drained after this season” admits Vandoorne

At the start of the last race of the calendar, Vandoorne only needed to score 6 points to be crowned. Starting in 4th position on the grid, the ex-F1 driver managed his race perfectly, avoiding pitfalls and even placing his Mercedes on the 2nd step of the podium. “It was difficult to stay focused because the pace at the end of the race was so high (…) I really had to stay focused to secure this 2nd place. It was a memorable day. I'm just gutted after this season. The team and I put in a lot of effort, it’s incredible. »

In 2023, for the introduction of the new Gen3, Stoffel Vandoorne will join the DS Dragon team as reigning champion.
