The new qualifying format (where the first row is determined following a duel between the two fastest drivers) of the Formula E smiled at Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes) this Saturday April 9 in Rome (Italy).
The runner-up of the 2019-20 season created the difference with better grip exiting corners compared to his opponent, Robin Frijns (Envision). This is the Belgian's seventh pole position in the electric discipline.
A brilliant result for @svandoorne as he secures pole position for the #RomeEPrice, which he won last season 👏@RFrijns kept it on the limit the entire lap but it simply wasn't enough to beat the @MercedesEQFE driver! pic.twitter.com/5NxDfxgWb7

Mercedes announces itself as one of the favorite teams for the Italian ePrix this Saturday (there will be another the next day) by placing the outgoing champion Nyck de Vries in third place. DS Techeetah will also play the leading roles with the fourth fastest time of Antonio Félix da Costa followed immediately by the Frenchman Jean-Éric Vergne.
The championship leader, Edoardo Mortara (Venturi) will only start 11th. The French team Nissan e.dams is rejected in 16th (Maximilian Günther) and 17th (Sébastien Buemi). The local of the stage, and beginner in FE, Antonio Giovinazzi (Dragon) brings up the rear in 22nd position.
The start of the Rome ePrix will be at 15 p.m.
