Stoffel Vandoorne is now a world champion! The Belgian won the world championship in Formula E 2022, his first world title. The pilot Mercedes only needed 6 points in this last event of the season, in Seoul, to be titled. Thanks to his 2nd place in Race 2, Vandoorne validated his coronation far ahead of Mitch Evans. Among the constructors, Mercedes retained their crown and won the championship for the second time in a row, in their final year in Formula E.

Mortara wins 100th, Vandoorne managed

On the starting grid, Stoffel Vandoorne was already in an ideal position to bag the title. Starting 4th, the Belgian managed to maintain his position after the first corner. In front, despite a good start, pole sitter Antonio Félix da Costa (DS Techeetah) gave in to Eduardo Mortara after a few minutes. The Swiss, installed in the lead, then escaped in front of Dennis and Da Costa. No pile-ups on this second Korean race but some mayhem on the winding sections. Nyck de Vries (Mercedes) et Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche) sont allés au contact et ont dû rapidement abandonner.

On the dry track, the positions quickly solidified... before the intervention of the safety car. Maximilian Gunther stopped between turns 19 and 20. The suspension of the Nissan e.Dams gave way, the German hitting the wall before coming to a stop on the straight. Mitch Evans, then 7th and in full recovery, found himself trapped with the use of his Attack Mode during the Safety Car.

After a 10-minute interruption, the race was restarted and saw Da Costa lose everything from the first meters. While attempting to pass Jake Dennis for 2nd place, the DS driver was hit on the inside of the corner and ended up in the wall. If Dennis was penalized by 5 seconds, Da Costa was able to restart but in last position. At the front, Eduardo Mortara quickly escaped to the front of the race. The Swiss won for the 4th time this season, ahead of the new champion Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes) and Jake Dennis (Andretti). A great podium for the 100th race in the history of Formula E, but also the last in Gen2.

Mercedes titled for its last

In the championship, Stoffel Vandoorne finally finished 30 points ahead of Mitch Evans, 7th in the last race of the season. The Mercedes driver becomes the 2nd Belgian world champion in motorsport after Jacky Ickx (world endurance champion in 1982 and 1983). On the manufacturers' side, Mercedes retains its title ahead of Venturi. The Silver Arrows have therefore won 2 championships in 3 seasons, while the German brand is leaving Formula E this season.
