For the first time this season, the poleman of an ePrix will not be a driver Mercedes. After Nyck de Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne in Diriyah (Saudi Arabia), it was Pascal Wehrlein who took pole position in Mexico (Mexico), the 3rd of his career in Formula E.
In great rhythm, the Porsche were among the favorites for pole position in the Mexican capital. If André Lotterer had set the best time in EL1 and 2nd in EL2, it was finally the other German of the clan, Pascal Wehrlein, who did well during qualifying this Saturday.
Pulled from his qualifying group, Pascal Wehrlein had a perfect run to the final by sweeping Stoffel Vandoorne in the quarter-finals and Jean-Éric Vergne (DS Techeetah) to face Edoardo Mortara (Venturi) for the big duel.
Yet left behind on his fast lap, the former Sauber driver in F1 took advantage of the championship leader's huge slide in the last corner to score his first pole of the year. Too much on the attack Edoardo Mortara has in fact lost control of his car and crossed the finish line in a slide. An error which allowed Pascal Wehrlein to beat him by 273 thousandths (1'07"100 against 1'07"373).
Beaten in the semi-final by the future poleman, Jean-Éric Vergne will start from 4th position this Saturday evening just behind the 2nd Porsche driver, André Lotterer, while Antonio Félix da Costa (DS Techeetah) will start behind his teammate .
Winner in Saudi Arabia, Nyck de Vries was knocked out in the quarter-finals by André Lotterer, thus settling for 6th position on the grid. Following him are Robin Frijns (Envision Racing), Stoffel Vandoorne, Nick Cassidy (Envision Racing) and Maximilian Günther (Nissan e.Dams).
