GP2-C1: Giovinazzi emerges from chaos

Antonio Giovinazzi (Prema Racing) celebrated his first victory in the GP2 Series in Baku (Azerbaijan) after a race marked by numerous accidents and four safety car entries.

The Italian who started from pole slipped to fourth position at the start but was able to regain the advantage by overtaking his compatriot Raffaele Marciello (Russian Time). The pole sitter finally finished one second ahead of Sergey Sirotkin (ART GP) while Marciello took the last step of the podium. Oliver Rowland (MP Motorsport) and Mitch Evans (Campos Racing) complete the top five.

The safety car entered the track four times due to multiple collisions, leaving only ten drivers on track at the checkered flag. Pierre Gasly (Prema Racing) notably clashed with Norman Nato (Racing Engineering) before being hit by Sergio Canamasas (Carlin).

This accident also involved Alex Lynn (Dams), Marvin Kirchhöfer (Carlin) and Nicholas latifi (Dams). Nato finally retired following new contact with Jordan King (Racing Engineering). Arthur Pic (Rapax) threw in the towel after contact with Artem Markelov (Russian Time). Only ten cars finished.

Despite his retirement, Norman Nato retains the lead in the Championship with one point ahead of Artem Markelov since the first four drivers in the general classification have dismounted.
