GP2-C1: Palmer on pole ahead of Vandoorne at Hockenheim

Jolyon Palmer will have a new opportunity to consolidate his lead in the GP2 Series Championship after winning his third pole of the season after Bahrain and Monaco on the Hockenheim circuit which he completed with a time of 1'23"383 in oppressive heat . The Briton will nevertheless have to be wary of Stoffel Vandoorne (ART GP) who will start alongside him on the front row despite being behind by almost three tenths.

Stefano Coletti (Racing Engineering) confirms its good performances achieved in tests taking third place on the grid. The Monegasque will be accompanied by Tom Dillmann who replaces at short notice Alexander Rossi who left Caterham Racing for Campos. The American took ninth position with his new team. Arthur Pic (Campos Racing) will start from sixth position between Felipe Nasr (Carlin) and Johnny Cecotto (Trident), the winner of the Race two years earlier, who was ultimately demoted three places on the grid. Nathanaël Berthon (Venezuela GP Lazarus) finished 13th.

The GP2 Series stewards had their work cut out after qualifying for Race 1 at Hockenheim. Takuya Izawa (ART GP) received a three-place penalty for impeding Raffaele Marciello (Racing Engineering), adding to a five-place penalty received at Silverstone. Johnny Cecotto (Trident) suffered the same punishment for slowing down Rio Haryanto (Caterham Racing) at turn 13. But the Indonesian received the same sanction for also obstructing Raffaele Marciello in the same place. Johnny Cecotto will start from tenth position, while Kazuya Izawa will start from 23rd place and Rio Haryanto 25th.
