GP2 – Cecotto beats Palmer for pole at Red Bull Ring

Johnny Cecotto (Trident) won GP2 Series qualifying on the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg by setting a time of 1’15”312 before the rain arrived in the final minutes of the session. The Venezuelan narrowly won since the leader Jolyon Palmer (Dams) and his rival Felipe Nasr (Carlin) are the closest, ranking four hundredths behind the poleman. Stefano Coletti (Racing Engineering) completes the second row with only six thousandths ahead of his teammate Raffaele Marciello.

The reigning champion of the F3 European Championship will start from fifth position ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne (ART Grand Prix), the Formula vice-champion. Renault 3.5 Series. The Belgian will still have to be wary of Arthur Pic who ranked seventh with less than three tenths behind the qualifying reference time. The Russian Time drivers, Mitch Evans and Mitch Evans, as well as Stéphane Richelmi (Dams) complete the top ten. If the first 20 drivers are less than a second from pole, Nathanaël Berthon (Venezuela GP Lazarus) was once again the slowest. The Frenchman had encountered gearbox problems during free practice.
