After dominating the free practice sessions, Johnny Cecotto Jr took pole for Race 1 in Monaco by setting the best time (1'21"195) in the two qualifying groups. Max Chilton (Carlin) was the fastest in Group A, but with a time of 1'21"320, the Briton will only start from second place behind the Venezuelan. Marcus Ericsson (iSport International) was however faster than the Carlin driver, but the play of the groups penalizes the Swede who will start alongside Giedo van Der Garde. If the Caterham Racing driver continues to shine, his teammate Rodolfo Gonzalez had a more difficult session when he hit the rail at the Swimming Pool.
Luiz Razia (Arden International) completes the top five ahead of Jolyon Palmer (iSport International), whose car should finally show reliability after a catastrophic start to the season for the Briton. Davide Valsecchi (Dams), winner on the Rock last year, took seventh place ahead of Josef Kral (Barwa Addax Team) and Fabio Leimer (Racing Engineering). Esteban Gutiérrez (Lotus) completes the top ten on the grid ahead of Tom Dillmann (Rapax), who intends to return to the front after a difficult weekend in Barcelona. His compatriot Nathanaël Berthon (racing Engineering) sets the 16th time.
