GP2 – Tire regulations are evolving

Pirelli takes center stage this season in F1 since the significant degradation of the tires causes heated debates in the paddock. These tires are for some responsible for the current profile of results where five different winners have won the first five races of the season, proof of a certain inability to make any prediction on the performance of the single-seaters. Tire strategies are in any case an essential parameter for winning in Grand Prix and the GP2 Series seeks to copy this trend by increasing the difficulty in the choice of drivers.

If the teams had until Barcelona three sets of hard tires and one set of soft tires per car for the weekend, with a set of new hard tires compulsory for the Sprint race on Sunday, the regulations will now allow drivers to dispose of their four sets of tires as they see fit (two of the hardest quality, two of the softest offered), always with the obligation to put on a new one for the free session. The use of the two ?soft? trains and both ?supersoft? is specific to Monaco and should not recur often between now and the end of the season, depending on the constraints combined with the temperatures encountered on future circuits. “The new tire rules are an interesting development that will allow weekend strategy and management to have a greater impact, making GP2's preparation for the single-seater summit even better”, explains Mario Isola, Pirelli manager for GP2. “With two sets of soft tires in Monaco, the drivers will have to think carefully about how they use them, they will also have better preparation by driving more with soft compounds and will thus be able to better preserve them. »
