James Calado (Lotus GP) therefore achieved his second pole position of the season on Spanish soil by setting a lap in 1'47'342. It was close to another beginner setting the best time in qualifying as the Brazilian from the DAMS team, Felipe Nasr, finished a breath behind the Briton. After a few difficult meetings, Esteban Gutiérrez (Lotus GP) returned to contention by finishing in third position ahead of championship leader Davide Valsecchi (DAMS) and Giedo van der Garde (Caterham Racing).
Tom Dillmann (Rapax Team) set the 12th time of this session, 0” from pole position. The Frenchman in front of the two Monegasques on the field, Stefano Coletti (Team Coloni) finishing ahead of Stéphane Richelmi (Trident Racing). Nathanaël Berthon (Racing Engineergin) is 16th behind Johnny Ceccoto, winner in the streets of the principality four weeks ago.
