Grosjean will start on oval at Gateway

Romain Grosjean takes a liking toIndyCar. Motivated by his remarkable debut punctuated by a pole position and a second place on the Indianapolis road course, the Frenchman from the Dale Coyne Racing team will finally take the plunge on oval tracks at the end of the 2021 season.

The former pilot of Formula 1 had refused to participate in the Indianapolis 500 in particular following the request of his family, marked by his accident at the Bahrain Grand Prix last November. But things could change, as he announced during a live Twitch hosted by Julien Fébreau Monday May 24.

“Everything can change in the future. Never say never ! » And to reveal its participation in the Gateway event, a 2 km (1,25 mile) short track that IndyCar must tackle on August 21.

" Normally, I'm going to do Gateway this summer. I was told it wasn't the easiest oval to start with. But we have to slow down (before the two turns. Ed.), and that's why I chose this path. That reassures me a little. »

However, Romain Grosjean was not a fan of ovals, these tracks where average speeds reach extraordinary levels compared to road courses. « Honestly, it's not something that appealed to me. But it's part of the championship and it seems to be a different experience. I think the ovals are much more complicated than the outer impression, (where it is believed that) it's all the way. These are races where anything can happen. »
