Hulkenberg close to title

Nico Hulkenberg arrives at Monza as the big favorite for the GP2 Series championship title. After a discreet start to the season (5th with 17 points after six races), the German driver was able to line up the podiums and even take the measure of Romain Grosjean, dominant at the start of the season. Not always successful, the Franco-Swiss was quickly overtaken at the head of the championship by the ART Grand Prix driver. After the Nürburgring, where he was a hit with 20 points (one pole, two victories, two fastest laps), Hülkenberg moved to the top of the standings, never dropping again after that.

If Romain Grosjean was quickly overtaken by the German, his tenure in the seat of the Renault R29 and Formula 1 left the field completely open to the 2008 Formula 3 Euro Series champion. Since then, Nico Hülkenberg has flown through the series, having no credible rival other than Vitaly Petrov, former teammate of Romain Grosjean. But the Russian, not in good luck at Spa-Francorchamps, is 28 points behind the leader and could well lose all hope from the first race at Monza, this weekend, and even before the last weekend of competition, in Portugal (Algarve, September 19-20).

Indeed, if Nico Hülkenberg scores as many points as Vitaly Petrov at the end of the first race, he will be declared champion. The test driver of the Formula 1 team Williams is therefore in a very favorable situation. After his title in Formula BMW ADAC in 2005, that in A1 GP in 2006-07, his third place in F3 Euro Series in 2007 then the title in 2008, this new line in his prize list could propel him towards F1, probably at Williams. In the meantime, the ART Grand Prix driver is focusing on his objective: validating his title this weekend at Monza.
