IndyCar – No grid penalties at Indy 500

At Long Beach, all cars equipped with a Chevrolet V6 were penalized with a 10-place penalty on the starting grid for an engine change not approved by the stewards. But for any unapproved changes between the next round (Sao-Paulo this weekend) and the Indianapolis 500 will not be taken into account for Indianapolis, but will be carried over to the next round. The period being from May 7 and the rookie tests at Texas Motor Speedway to May 20, Bump Day (second and final day of qualifying).

“We do not intend to apply any penalties that could disrupt the starting grid for the Indianapolis 500 in relation to the positions obtained at the end of qualifying, underlines Will Philipps, vice-president of technology atIndyCar. We are not saying that there will be no penalties. They will not be applied in Indianapolis, but at the following event (in Detroit on June 3. Editor's note). Likewise, if a competitor receives two penalties, they will be postponed to the next two events.” The starting grid for the 96th edition of Indy 500 will therefore be consistent with the times achieved during the qualifying days.
