Will Power (Team Penske) improved the reference time for tests ofIndyCar at Barber Motorsports Park (Alabama) by achieving a time of 1'07"311. Although the lap record established in 2013 by Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) was not beaten (1'06"775), the three-time champion benefited from more efficient tires and cooler conditions which reinforced grip. It was also the New Zealander who was closest to the Australian with eight hundredths behind.
In total, the first 21 drivers beat last year's pole also achieved by Will Power. Stefano Coletti (KV Racing Technology) was the fastest of the rookies by achieving the third fastest time in practice ahead of the Penske drivers Helio Castroneves et simon pagenaud. With Juan-Pablo Montoya in ninth position, Team Penske shows promising performances for the future by placing its four cars in the top ten.
The DW12s powered by Honda were a little more discreet since it was Graham Rahal (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing) who was the fastest with the Japanese aero kit, setting the seventh fastest time.
The 23 drivers present at the Barber Motorsports Park test completed a total of 2832 laps over the two days of testing. The season will begin on March 29 with the St Petersburg GP (Florida).
