Alonso soon to test IndyCar on road circuit

Alonso announced this week thathe would not race in Formula 1 next year without specifying its plans for 2019, apart from the second half of the Super Season of the World ChampionshipEndurance FIA.

Since its success in the last 24 Hours of Le Mans with Toyota, the Bull of Asturias is more determined than ever to win the Triple Crown which also includes the title F1 and victory at the Indianapolis 500.

After a first attempt on the legendary Indiana super speedway in 2017, it would be very logical to find Alonso during the next “Month of May”. And the pilot's adventures across the Atlantic McLaren could well go beyond the scope of the Indy 500.

CARhebdo has in fact learned that the native of Oviedo is preparing to soon return to the Andretti team, which lined him up at Indy in 2017, as part of a road circuit test. Asked about this possibility during an interview with a limited number of media ahead of the 6 Hours of Silverstone, Alonso admitted that such an opportunity existed and interested him.

« She showed up in the last two days so I have to decide, did he declare. This can be a stimulating experience because I had a lot of fun at the Indy 500 last year but I don't know this type of car on a more traditional route with more classic settings.

Above all, I want to take my time to digest my departure from F1 and concentrate on the WEC this weekend because one of the reasons why I chose to do the Super Season was to become Endurance world champion.

The priority was to win Le Mans and the Super Season offered two chances to win in Sarthe. The second priority is to win the title. There was a date conflict between Sebring and the Australian Grand Prix (both events fall on the weekend of March 15-17, 2019, Editor’s note). The problem no longer arises so the WEC has even more priority.

I'm not yet ready to announce my plans for next season and I won't do it for two months, around October. It will be a long wait and I expect there will be a lot of speculation ».

Alonso also returned to the reasons which made him give up F1 after 17 seasons among the elite. In his sights: the lack of sparks on the track and the predictability of the results.

« I'm stopping because I find that the show offered is very poor, added the Iberian. Today, we talk more about what happens outside the circuit. We talk about controversies, radio messages, that kind of thing.

When that's all there is in the press and discussions, it's a bad sign. This means that the action on track is far from spectacular. This is my current feeling towards F1. I think other championships are more likely to thrill and make people happy.

Before, even when I won few or no races – I'm talking about the 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, or 2011 seasons – it was difficult to guess who was going to win at Spa or Monza. Today I can tell you exactly what is going to happen. I can give you the ranking of the top 15 at Spa and Monza, barring one or two errors. You arrive in Barcelona for the first day of winter testing and you know how the season will go until Abu Dhabi.

It's hard to accept. For me, it's not too much of a problem anymore because after 18 years I have accomplished much more than my dreams. But for young talents, it must be really frustrating. Either they hope that their team will make enormous progress or that one of the two top teams will call them. F1 has become a difficult environment for ambitious drivers ».
