The oval racing specialist Ed carpenter (Ed Carpenter Racing) took pole position for the Indianapolis 500 (Indiana, May 27). The American completed four laps of the circuit at 370 km/h and thus scored a third pole at Indianapolis in the last six years.

The French behaved very well on Sunday. simon pagenaud (Penske) held the best time before Ed Carpenter's passage, but the 2016 IndyCar champion will still start from second place (+0''587).

Also qualified in Fast Nine, a phase bringing together the nine fastest drivers in free practice, Sébastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing) set the fifth fastest time, one second behind the poleman. Defending champion Josef Newgarden (Penske) is fourth (+0”833) and Will Power (Penske) third (+0”693).
For his farewell to the competition, Danica Patrick (Ed Carpenter Racing) managed to beat the experienced Helio Castroneves (Penske) and Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) for the seventh place on the starting grid.
