How can Pagenaud be champion at Laguna Seca?

Four pilots claim the coronation. Josef Newgarden (Penske) leads the way with a 41-point lead over Alexander Red (Andretti). simon pagenaud (Penske) is 42 points behind while Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi) is banking on a miracle to win (+85 points).

Quite logically, Josef Newgarden holds the keys to the final. To pocket a second coronation, the American can be satisfied with a fourth position under the checkered flag, regardless of the rank of each rival.

To the Frenchman, the simplest scenario is to win the race. If he wins on Sunday September 22 in California, he must hope at least that his teammate Josef Newgarden finishes sixth.

However, other plans are possible for the outgoing winner of the Indianapolis 500. Here are the most probable; it is implied that Alexander Rossi finishes behind Poitevin in the following cases:

– Simon Pagenaud is champion if he wins, scores 3 bonus points (1 pt for pole, 1 pt for leading a lap and 2 pts for the one who leads the most in the race) and Josef Newgarden finishes fifth.

– Simon Pagenaud is champion if he wins without bonus and Josef Newgarden finishes sixth or higher.

– Simon Pagenaud is champion if he finishes second with 3 points bonus and Josef Newgarden finishes 10th.

– Simon Pagenaud is champion if he finishes 2nd with 1 bonus point and Josef Newgarden finishes 11th.

– Simon Pagenaud is champion if he finishes 2nd without bonus points and Josef Newgarden finishes 12th or higher.

– Simon Pagenaud is champion if he finishes 3rd and 3 bonus points and Josef Newgarden finishes 15th or beyond.

According to Simon Pagenaud's bonus points:

– He is champion if he finishes 4th (+ bonus points) and Josef Newgarden finishes 18th or higher.

– He is champion if he finishes 5th (+ bonus points) and Josef Newgarden finishes 20th or higher

– He is champion if he finishes 6th (+ bonus points) and Josef Newgarden finishes 22th or higher.

In short, the IndyCar finale could provide intense suspense if one of these scenarios materializes. The race will be followed on Canal+ Sport Weekend on Sunday September 22 from 20:35 p.m.
