GP Indy: rookie VeeKay on pole!

Ed Carpenter Racing rookie Rinus Veekay scored the first pole of his career on the Indianapolis road course, with a best lap of 1'09"6903.

“I raced several times on this circuit, in Indy Lights, and then during the first Indy GP (July 4) and that helped me,” he reacted.

In a qualifying session where the drivers were separated into two groups, Josef Newgarden (Penske) was the fastest in the first group, and will start alongside the 20-year-old rookie.

The general leader, Scott Dixon, will start in 12th position, an opportunity for Newgarden to grab a few points in his arduous quest for the championship. Before the two races on the weekend's program, 72 points separate the first two in the general classification.

The session of the first qualifying group which brought together most of the big names in the series was cut short following a spin from Takuma Sato (RLL Racing), which notably deprived simon pagenaud, 22nd on the grid, to set off for one last attempt. Same frustration for Sébastrien Bourdais (AJ Foyt Racing), who will start in 16th position.

The first race will take place on Friday from 22 p.m. (HF), the second on Saturday from 20:30 p.m.
