24 hours later: the outcry continues to make waves. Following the surprise non-qualification of Fernando Alonso for the next Indianapolis 500, McLaren and the former deputy team principal of the late Force India have parted ways. The British team confirmed this to AUTOhebdo specifying that Fernley's contract was only for the Indy 500.
The latter had been recruited by McLaren to lead the Woking program with Fernando Alonso across the Atlantic. Double world champion F1 and winner of 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Spaniard only has the US classic to hang on to join Graham Hill on the “Triple Crown” list.
At the end of a particularly frustrating week marked by a crash and several technical setbacks, Alonso and his team failed in the “Last Shootout” and were eliminated in one breath by the modest structure of Juncos Racing led by Kyle Kaiser . A snub which precipitated Fernley's departure and which we would not be surprised if it had other consequences.
