“Bump Day” made it possible to establish an initial hierarchy in qualifying for the 102nd edition of the Indianapolis 500. The session was interrupted for more than two hours due to rain.
simon pagenaud (Team Penke) and his compatriot Sébastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing) secured a place in the top nine. The 2016 champion set the third fastest time (calculated based on four laps) while the four-time Champ Car champion finished fifth ahead of Spencer Pigot (Ed Carpenter Racing).
Helio Castroneves (Team Penske) set the benchmark. The Team Penske drivers were in good form as Will Power took fourth place while Josef Newgarden placed seventh.
For his last release in IndyCar, Danica Patrick (Ed Carpenter Racing) secured a place in the top nine by placing behind Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing).
“Bump Day” was also the end of hopes for James Hinchcliffe (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports). The poleman of the 100th edition encountered a vibration problem preventing him from reaching the average necessary to qualify among the 33 drivers. Pippa Mann (Dale Coyne Racing) was also eliminated.
