Indy 500 – Marco Andretti in pole position

Marco Andretti (Andretti Herta Autosport w/ Marco Andretti & Curb-Agajanian – Honda) took pole position from the 2020 edition of the 500 miles from Indianapolis at the end of the Fast 9, with his four best laps completed at an average of 371,867 km/h.

“There was a lot of wind, it was complicated in turns three and four, but starting in the lead (next Sunday) will definitely make things easier. » declared the 33-year-old American, clearly moved and seeming not to believe it.

Twenty-first and last full-time driver in the championship, but often performing well at the Indy 500 (2nd in 2006 during his first participation, and three times 3rd in 2008, 2010, and 2014), Marco Andretti scores first Andretti pole at the Brickyard since his grandfather, Mario Andretti, in 1987.

The 33-year-old American is the only one in his team to perform as well as the day before, when he dominated qualifying, after also being the fastest during Fast Friday, while Alexander Red (9th), Ryan Hunter-Reay (5th), and James Hinchcliffe (6th), had to settle for runners-up.

Andretti Autosport crushed Saturday's qualifying day, setting the four best times, but it was Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing - Honda), who started in 5th position, who led the Fast 9 for a long time, before Marco Andretti, the last to enter the track, allowing the team led by his father, Michael, to regain the upper hand.

“I am happy for Marco, reacted Dixon, who averaged 371,840 km/h. He showed a lot of consistency, it’s fabulous for his family, but we will have a good chance to play during the race.”

The third tenant on the front row is Takuma Sato (RLL Racing), the winner of the 2017 edition of the 500 miles. Fourth, Rinus VeeKay (Ed Carpenter Racing) will be the first rookie on the grid, and the only one powered by Chevrolet on the first three rows, while Alex Palou (Dale Coyne Racing) obtained a good 7th place.

The Indianapolis 500 will take place in a week with the challenge of succeeding on the list of winners simon pagenaud (Team Penske – Chevrolet).
