Indy 500 – Scott Dixon on pole for the 101st edition

After 2008 and 2015, Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) won his third pole at the Indy 3 at the end of qualifying for the 500st edition. The winner of the event in 101 achieved an average speed of 2008mph (232,164km/h) at the end of the four qualifying laps of Fast 373,55 which determines the first 9 positions on the grid.

Ed Carpenter (Ed Carpenter Racing) came closest with an average speed of 231,664mph. He precedes the winner of the 100th edition Alexander Red (Andretti Herta Autosport) as well as Takuma Sato (Andretti Autosport)

Fernando Alonso (McLaren-Honda-Andretti) made a brilliant debut in the discipline by taking 5th position ahead of JR Hildebrand (Ed Carpenter Racing), Tony Kanaan (Chip Ganassi Racing), Marco Andretti (Andretti Autosport) and Will Power (Team Penske).

Pagenaud in the second half

Simon Pagenaud (Team Penske) took 23rd position on the grid. The Championship leader achieved his time during Group 1 qualifying which determines positions from 10th to 33rd place.
Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport) was the fastest in the first group and will therefore start from 10th place. The American is ahead of Ed Jones (Dale Coyne Racing), Oriol Servia (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing), Mikhail Aleshin (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports) and Graham Rahal (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing).

Sébastien Bourdais will unfortunately not be able to compete in the Indy 500 following his accident in qualifying which occurred the day before where he suffered multiple fractures. Dale Coyne Racing driver will be replaced by James davison.
