The first free practice session held after qualifying for the Indy 500 was dominated by Josef Newgarden ahead of Tony Kanaan and Scott Dixon.

Indy500 – Newgarden shines in FP8

After the first major meeting of qualifying, dominated by James Hinchcliffe and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, the competitors in the Indianapolis 500 returned to the track for the eighth free practice session. A session which smiled on the single-seaters powered by Chevrolet units since the first four drivers drove cars powered by the American engine.

Josef Newgarden (Ed Carpenter Racing – Chevrolet) showed the most verve by setting a best lap in 39″575, at a speed of 365,987 km/h. The American is ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing drivers Tony Kanaan and Scott Dixon while Sage Karam (Dreyer & Reinbold Racing – Chevrolet) completes the leading quartet.

Pippa Mann (Dale Coyne Racing) is the best representative of the Honda clan with a fifth place and precedes Charlie Kimball (Chip Ganassi Racing – Chevrolet), Mikhail Aleshin (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports – Honda), JR Hildebrand (Ed Carpenter Racing – Chevrolet), Alexander Red (Andretti-Herta – Honda) and Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport – Honda).

The first car of Team Penske – Chevrolet of Will Power takes 18th place. simon pagenaud finished in 22nd place just ahead of Sébastien Bourdais (KVSH Racing – Chevrolet). Note that this session was the most productive this year in Indianapolis for the teams with no less than nine drivers covering more than 100 laps and 2886 loops completed by the entire field.
