IndyCar – Franchitti fastest in Detroit, Viso on pole

Dario Franchitti (Chip Ganassi Racing) was the fastest in the Firestone Fast Six in the first qualifying session held in Detroit in rainy conditions. By achieving a time of 1'19"331, the Scotsman secured the bonus point as well as the reward for his performance. However, the driver of the No. 12 DW10 will have to move back ten places on the grid following his penalty imposed at the Indy 500 for an engine change. EJ Viso (Andretti Autosport) thus recovers first position and will start from the front alongside Mike conway (Dale Coyne Racing). The second row will be completed by James Jakes (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing) and Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport).

If Tristan Vautier (Schmidt Motorsports) was unable to access the Firestone Fast Six following a red flag in Round 2 with Helio Castroneves (Team Penske), the Frenchman will still start from the third row alongside Alex Tagliani (Bryan Herta Autosport). His teammate simon pagenaud will start from the fourth row against Will Power (Team Penske). Sebastian Bourdais (Dragon Racing) secured 14th position. With the identical penalties to the poleman inflicted on Graham Rahal (Rhal Letterman Lanigan Racing), Josef Newgarden (Sarah Fisher Racing) and Charlie Kimball (Ganassi Racing), Tony Kanaan, last winner at the Indy 500, will start from 19th place.
