Helio Castroneves signed the second pole of the season after Long Beach (California) by winning qualifying for the Phoenix GP (Arizona) as he had already done last year. The Brazilian, who scored the 49th pole of his career in IndyCar tied with Bobby Unser, also captured the new track record with a two-lap average of 194,905 mph (313,6 km/h) on the 1,022-mile oval.
Team Penske had a near-perfect result, placing all four drivers in the top five. Will Power will start on the front row, while simon pagenaud will complete the top five behind Josef Newgarden. Only JR Hildebrand (Ed Carpenter Racing) stood between the Penske drivers, taking 3rd place.
Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) will have to work hard to achieve the same feat as last year when he won since he will start from 8th position behind Tony Kanaan (Chip Ganassi Racing) and Mikhail Aleshin (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports ). Championship leader Sébastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing) took 10th position on the grid behind Marco Andretti (Andretti Autosport).
