IndyCar – Hildebrand test reference in Phoenix
J.R Hildebrand (Ed Carpenter Racing) set the best time in testing for theIndyCar at the Phoenix Raceway (Arizona). The driver of the No. 21 completed a lap of the one-mile oval in 19, half a second better than the reference of the day before by Josef Newgarden (Team Penske).
“I like to progress on short tracks because they are very delicate to tackle, explained the American who was riding for the first time on this oval with the new aero kits. Most of the drivers made progress in the penultimate session, but the first five places are monopolized by the Chevrolet kits. Ed Carpenter (Ed Carpenter Racing) is closest to the best time and is ahead of Penske drivers Josef Newgarden, Helio Castroneves and Will Power.
Mikhail Aleshin (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports) finished as the best Honda driver, placing 6th ahead of Tony Kanaan (Chip Ganassi Racing) and simon pagenaud (Team Penske). The reigning champion preceded his compatriot Sébastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing).
Alexander Red (Andretti Herta Autosport) and Takuma Sato (Andretti Autosport) made mistakes during the second day of testing, with both drivers ending up in the wall without fortunately being injured. Josef Newgarden and Sébastien Bourdais also got hot when lightly touching each other during practice, but both drivers were able to return to the pits.
The 2017 IndyCar season will begin in a month with the Grand Prix of St Petersburg (Florida) held on March 12. The Phoenix oval will once again welcome IndyCar on April 29 for the 4th event on the calendar.
