IndyCar – Honda and Chevrolet to produce their own aero kits in 2015

The officials of theIndyCar had already approved the creation of such aero kits last June. Specifications will be introduced depending on the nature of the circuits encountered by the competitors, namely super-speedways or road/urban/short oval circuits. In addition, the differences which will go hand in hand with separate development between Chevrolet and Honda could facilitate the recognition of single-seaters depending on whether they are powered by the American or Japanese V6.

“These kits will increase the diversity of the fan experience as well as provide new technical momentum for the series.” said Derrick Walker, IndyCar competition and operations manager. Furthermore, it will promote cost reduction” he adds. In fact, the maximum cost for a kit cannot exceed $75.000 per aero kit. The update to the “2016 version” kit will be offered at a maximum of $15.000. »

As for engine manufacturers, we are delighted with such a development. “This will allow Chevrolet to have a greater impact on the performance of the teams we supply.” explains Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing program manager for IndyCar.
»We are confident in our ability to put teams in a position to win races. »

Same story with the Japanese. Roger Griffiths, technical director of Honda Performance Development believes that “this new possibility will encourage innovation.”

The areas where Chevrolet and Honda will be able to intervene correspond, among others, to the engine hood or on the sidepods. The first tests will take place on October 6, 2014 and will end on January 18, 2015.

Logically, the regulations are evolving and will only authorize the use of a maximum of two kits during a season. The basic 2012 version offered by Dallara will count as one kit. For the Indy 500, more than one kit may be used in practice, but the one used in qualifying must be used in the race.
