IndyCar – First pole for Newgarden in Milwaukee

Since the start of the weekend on the Milwaukee oval, the American Joseph Newgarden seems on cloud nine. The stable resident CFH Racing? Chevrolet had already dominated the entire free practice sessions before showing up at the start of qualifying this Sunday evening.

The double winner in Alabama and Toronto in Canada earlier in the season, took his first career pole position with a best average over the two laps set in 42 (at an average of 932 km/h). Ryan Briscoe (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports? Honda) fails in second position while Sage Karam (Chip Ganassi Racing? Chevrolet), Tony Kanaan (Chip Ganassi Racing) and James Jakes (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports) complete the top 273,947.

The favorites were behind during this session. The overall leader Juan-Pablo Montoya (Team Penske? Chevrolet) only ranks 8th while his teammate Will Power only takes 14th place. Sébastien Bourdais (KV Racing? Chevrolet) will start from 11th position, simon pagenaud (Team Penske) will start in 17th position. Tristan Vautier (Dale Coyne Racing? Honda) will start from 20th row.

Note that Helio Castroneves (Team Penske) did not set a time. The Brazilian was unable to take part in the session, after showing up too late for the technical inspection. The three-time Indy 500 winner will start from the last position on the grid.
