After testing a new version of push to pass where drivers had to anticipate the activation of the boost, the Indycar organizers decided to return to the traditional version. The pilots welcomed this modification with great reservation.

Indycar – Push to instant pass for Baltimore

Push to pass is a system implemented from 2009 which allows drivers to activate a limited quantity of boost offering on average 200 additional rpm on the 6 liter V2.2s from the three engine manufacturers entered this year. The organizers wanted to establish a delay of several seconds between the activation and the triggering of the push to pass in order to increase overtaking maneuvers. However, this five-second delay had already been reduced to 3,5 seconds last weekend at Sonoma, after drivers strongly criticized the system change.

The discipline will therefore reintroduce the classic system with instant triggering for the Baltimore race. Competitors will have a total of 90 seconds of activation for the event with a maximum activation duration of 20 seconds on the two-mile (3,2km) course. “We had two races without activation delay and two events with it”, underlines Trevor Knowles, the director of the engine department of the discipline. “After getting feedback from the drivers, we adjusted the push to pass parameters to suit this specific circuit. »
