Ryan Hunter-Reay takes his first pole of the season ahead of his teammate EJ Viso, not without improving the lap record. Sébastien Bourdais obtains a good place on the grid but his compatriots are behind.

IndyCar – Ryan Hunter-Reay on pole in Sao Paulo

Ryan Hunter-Reay shines again in Sao Paulo. The reigning champion, who has already won at Barber Motorsports Park, took pole at the end of the Firestone Fast Six with a time of 1:20, breaking the lap record following modifications made to the first two corners . The Andretti Autosport resident relegates his teammate EJ Viso to three tenths while the latter will start alongside him on the front row. Dario Franchitti (Ganassi Racing) and Tony Kanaan (KV Racing) nevertheless intend to disrupt the leaders' race by occupying the second row ahead of James Hinchcliffe (Andretti Autosport) and Scott Dixon (Ganassi Racing).

Sébastien Bourdais (Dragon Racing) achieved a great performance by obtaining seventh place alongside Simona de Silvestro (KV Racing). On the other hand, the two Frenchmen from Schmidt Motorsports will start from the back of the grid. Tristan Vautier, the only driver in the peloton to discover the Brazilian track, hit the wall of the first turns for the third time this weekend during the first round. If the reigning IndyLights champion will start from 21st place, his accident caused a red flag trapping several drivers including his teammate simon pagenaud only 24th. Will Power and Helio Castroneves (Team Penske) were trapped for their part with the red flag causing the breakdown of James Jakes (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing). The vice-champion will only start from 22nd place. Josef Newgarden (Sarah Fisher Racing) will start from the back of the grid following an engine change.
