Josef Newgarden on pole in Alabama, Sébastien Bourdais 3rd

At the end of the qualifying session this Saturday at Barber Motorsports Park, only 92 thousandths separate Joseph Newgarden (Team Penske – Chevrolet), poleman of the Alabama Grand Prix, Sébastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan – Honda) third in the session.

Proof that the famous Fast 6, bringing together the six best drivers from the first qualifying rounds, was very close for the award of pole. But in the end, Newgarden, already the fastest in the second part of qualifying, confirmed in the decisive moment by completing a best lap in 1'07″441 for his first pole on this track.

Second, his teammate Will Power fails at 12 thousandths and is ahead of Sébastien Bourdais, who will start on the second row alongside Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport – Honda), more than three tenths behind.

James Hinchcliffe (SPM – Honda) and Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing – Honda) complete the top 6 by more than five tenths. simon pagenaud (Team Penske) was unable to advance in the latter part of the session, falling to ninth place ahead of Robert Wickens (SPM – Honda).

Note that Tony Kanaan (AJ Foyt Enterprises – Chevrolet) made a mistake in his group in Q1, and hit the wall leaving the pit lane.

The race will start tomorrow at 21 p.m. French time.
